Antenatal Care

Antenatal Care

Once you are pregnant your midwife can care and support you through each stage of your pregnancy.

Antenatal visits are scheduled throughout your pregnancy to check on the health and well-being of you and your baby. We check your health, listen to the baby’s heart rate and measure growth. These visits can be scheduled at the centre or in your own home. Longer appointments can be booked to discuss any specific questions that you may have about your pregnancy and these may include:

  • I’m feeling very tired and not sleeping, Is this normal?
  • How often should I feel my baby’s movements?
  • My morning sickness is not going away, Is everything alright?
  • I’m really worried about my labour and birth, what can I do?

Blood tests and ultrasound scans can be ordered as required as well as prescription medications when needed.

Initial Consultation – What to Expect

This initial appointment can be attended at any time during pregnancy, from the time you realise you’re pregnant right up until you’re well into your pregnancy and is bulk billed.

This appointment usually takes one hour where we go through an antenatal check which includes a blood pressure check plus we check your baby’s heart rate (if able) and your baby’s growth. We also discuss what you are looking for in pregnancy care and include options for care that is available in Griffith.

At Pea in a Pod we have the time to listen to your needs and wants for your pregnancy. With all appointments, you will be seen by the same midwife at a time that suits you.
The initial antenatal appointment are attended at the centre.

Subsequent Consultations

If you feel that the pregnancy care at Pea in a Pod suits your needs, further consultations will be organised between you and your Midwife. The number of consultations will vary from woman to woman and the proposed schedule of care will be discussed with each consultation. If you feel you need more or fewer appointments with us that’s ok.

These consultations can be booked online, however, it’s important that we make sure that the initial consultation is done first. These appointments can be attended either at the centre or in your own home. At each visit you will always have an antenatal check including blood pressure, listening to baby’s heart rate (if able), checking your urine, measuring baby’s growth. This visit may also include reviewing or ordering any pathology or ultrasounds and education on topics such as labour, birth, breastfeeding, support, and reassurance.

benefits of a midwife
“We’re here to guide you through your pregnancy”

A woman who receives care from a known midwife has the time and opportunity to build trusting relationships with each other as they meet. Women and families cared for in this continuity of care model are more likely to have a normal birth, have a more positive experience of labour and birth, be satisfied with her maternity care, successfully breastfeed her baby and cost the health system less.
